We found out that
everything was not quite right with our pregnancy during the 20th week. We were
at our second ultrasound and we were going to find out what the sex of the baby
was. It was a boy… but they couldn’t see all four chambers of his little heart,
so they scheduled us for another ultrasound the next week. We didn’t think
anything about it, we were just happy about having another boy. We have
Lucas 16 months and Drew 14 years, from my wife’s previous marriage. The
following week we went to an ultrasound specialist and had our third
ultrasound. We didn’t know why we had to see a specialist, but we started to
get funny feelings. On October 22nd, 2014 we started the ultrasound to double
check the heart to find all the chambers. The doctor started to describe
everything he saw and pointed out body parts, then he got quiet. My wife and I
looked at each other. He told us that our son in fact were missing one chamber
of his heart. The left ventricle is very under developed. This is called
hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). They asked us if we could go in to
Dallas to see a cardiologist the same day or early the next day. We were very
shocked and extremely sad… what does this mean?
