James Hjärta

James hjärta saknar i princip hela vänster kammare och stora kroppspulsådern är underutvecklad. Den vänstra sidan har som uppgift att pumpa in syrerikt blod till kroppen. De flesta barn med HLHS har ett hål i skiljeväggen mellan vänster och höger förmak så syrerikt blod kommer in till höger sida och kan pumpas ut till kroppen. James saknar detta hål, men pga allt tryck i vänster förmak har hans hjärta skapat en ven som för syrerikt blod in till höger sida. Detta är inte tillräckligt med syre när han kommer till världen så en hjärtkateterisering måste ske så fort som möjligt för att öppna upp förbindelsen mellan höger- och vänster förmak så att James får tillräckligt med syre. Hypoplastisk Vänsterkammar Syndrom kan inte åtgärdas, men det kan behandlas med 3 öppna hjärtoperationer. Operationerna kallas Norwood, Glenn shunt och Fontan. Efter hjärtkakteteriseringen kommer James att ha Norwood operation 5-10 dagar gammal, Glenn shunt sker 6-9 månader gammal och Fontan 18-36 månader gammal.

James´ Heart

James heart is basically missing the left ventricle and the aorta is also very underdeveloped. The left side of the heart is the side that pumps oxygenated blood into the body. His heart also is closed between the left and right side, which is called an intact atrial septum. Most HLHS babies has an opening between the left atrium and right atrium which makes it possible for oxygenated blood to come in to the body through this opening. Because of all the pressure in the left atrium James heart has developed a decompression vein that transports some oxygenated blood to the right side so it can be pumped into the body. Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome cannot be fixed, but can be treated. The patient will undergo three reconstructive open heart surgeries to redirect the blood to the hearts right side. The procedures are called Norwood procedure, Glenn shunt, and Fontan. Because of James intact atrial septum he will have a heart catheter to open up the path between the LA and RA. Then he will have pulmonary artery bands put around the PA to slow down the blood flow. He will have Norwood 5-10 days after birth, Glenn shunt at 3-6 months of age, and Fontan procedure at 18-36 months of age.
